How to stick to your goals and keep them on track

How many times have you started out wanting to achieve something, only to find your motivation has dropped? It happens to us all. It isn’t always easy to stick to your goals and keep them on track. Life can get in the way, as can work. But it’s also natural to feel a dip in your motivation as you progress towards your goals.

When you first start, your motivation is naturally high. But as time goes on and the hard work kicks in, you’re going to feel your motivation naturally dip. So if you want to stick to your goals and keep them on track, here are some tips that will help!

If you want to stick to your goals, get organised

You’re going to find it so much easier to achieve anything if you’re organised. And it’s no different with your goals. I use Asana to list all my goals. I can then check in with them weekly, tick off the tasks I’ve completed, and set due dates for each action.

Break each goal down into individual tasks

I break each goal down into a list of tasks. The smaller the step, the easier it will be to move forward with your goal. So think about what individual tasks you need to do to reach your desired goal. Write each one down and list them in order.

Block out time to work on your goals

If you want to stick to your goals, you need to ensure you’re blocking out time to work on them. I make sure to block out time each week to work on my goals because if I don’t, then nothing gets done. It doesn’t matter if it’s just a 30-minute slot or a 2 hour one – just set aside the time and honour that time slot!

Give yourself a deadline

Without a deadline, you just have a desire. But when you give yourself a deadline, you deepen the level of commitment. Giving yourself a date to work towards will also increase your motivation, as you’ll find yourself working harder to reach your goal before that deadline.

Decide if anything can be outsourced

I look at each task within a goal and estimate how much time each thing will take. I also consider if anything can be outsourced – because you don’t have to do every step yourself, just because it’s your goal. Outsourcing can free up your time and help you achieve your goal faster.

Build in some accountability

If you want to stick to your goals and keep them on track, build in some form of accountability. The easiest way to do this is to tell someone about your intention. You can also get yourself an accountability partner or mentor, and make some form of public announcement – such as posting on your social media. You’ll work harder to achieve the things you want, simply because you don’t want to let other people down (and potentially look like you failed).

Make it matter to you

Your goals need to mean something to you; otherwise, you’ll not stick to them. Know why you want it and what it means to you to achieve it. Visualise what life will be like once you’ve completed your goal. Your mind can play a powerful role in your goal achievement, and seeing yourself after you’ve achieved can help ramp up believability and certainty of achievement.

Reward yourself for each achievement

Another great motivator is to attach a reward to each goal. When you make sure you reward yourself once a goal has been achieved, you boost those feel-good factors. Your brain will start to link positive emotions to achievement, and you’ll want to do more to feel good. Rewards I’ve used include getting my nails done, booking in a spa day or treating myself to a new book or bottle of Champagne.

It isn’t always easy to stick to your goals and keep them on track. Life can get in the way, as can work. And then there’s that natural motivation tip to take into account.

However, the above tips will definitely help you stay motivated and on track. You can also check out the daily habits I use to keep positive and motivated, as these will help lift you out of that slump and into a more positive frame of mind.

So now it’s over to you! What do you think of the tips listed above – do you have any additional tips you’d add to the list? Did this blog help you with your goals? I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas, so do please drop me a comment below!
