A look back on 2021

A look back on 2021

I always like to reflect on the year before we go into a new one. And that’s why I also took a little time to look back on 2021.

There’s so much you can glean from that glance back. I look back on what’s gone right and celebrate the wins. But I also look back at what’s gone wrong and celebrate the failures, too – because there are always lessons to be learnt.

One of the first things I do when I’m planning for the year ahead is to review the ending year.

I look at the goals I set myself for the year, and I ask myself two questions; what went well and what didn’t go well?

And as I took a look back on 2021 and what was a difficult year for many, I wanted to share with you what I wrote.

A look back on 2021 – what went well?

It isn’t always easy to come up with some positives, especially if the year’s been a little turbulent. But once you start digging, you will unearth something to celebrate. Here’s my list of things that went well this past year:

  1. I completed the Certification and have become trained in energy clearing and business strategy.
  2. I got really clear on my vision – and this has helped with getting really clear on my mission, goals and ideal clients. Everything has fallen into place.
  3. Looking back on 2021, I realise I now understand my purpose and what my soul is here to do.
  4. I have fallen in love with what I do again.
  5. 2021 enabled me to serve many amazing clients who have had great results from the work we’ve done together, whether through tech support, energy clearing, or business strategy. I’m so proud of them all.
  6. I found a balance when things were getting out of control.
  7. In 2021 I got consistent with my marketing.
  8. I managed to work through another lockdown and homeschool 2 kids (still not sure exactly how I managed this one #scarredforlife #notmyfinesthour).
  9. I launched a new brand, website and services.

A look back on 2021 – what didn’t go well?

And now for the balance. Not everything did go well – and that’s ok. As I explained in my previous blog post, How to plan and create goals (and stick with them), I was a bit overly ambitious. And none of us had the foresight that we’d be in another lockdown come January.

So those things that didn’t go so well included:

  1. I only reached 50% of my revenue target. I’m actually ok with that though considering the year we’ve had. The target was a stretch so I’m pleased I got to 50%.
  2. I didn’t launch all the digital products I’d planned to. When I look back and reflect on this, I just don’t think they were aligned with where I was heading – and that’s ok!
  3. I didn’t launch the podcast I’d planned to. This is still on the list and will happen in 2022. Again I think there was an element of not being aligned with what I was doing. Now I have clarity on where I’m heading and who I’m serving, so I’m raring to go with this.
  4. I didn’t grow my list or Facebook group as much as I’d hoped. But again, I think I held back because I knew I was in for a big change this year.

A look back over those lessons learnt

There seems to be a theme with what didn’t go well doesn’t there?

When things are no longer in alignment it makes it harder for you to achieve those goals.

I think I knew deep down that things were going to change after graduating from my Certification. I just didn’t know quite how much.

So I want to challenge you to go and do this reflection exercise before the year ends. Look at what you set for yourself, ask those two questions, and see what comes up for you.

Most importantly don’t beat yourself if you haven’t achieved those goals. Because were they ever actually in alignment with you and what you really want, moving forward?

Let me know how you get on.

And if you missed my 2022 planning session then you can grab the recording here.
